Overview

The Loire à Vélo is the easiest grand cycling holiday in Europe — 900 km of signposted, largely traffic-free routes along France's last wild river, with a château every day's ride. Base the week between Blois and Saumur and the roll-call is absurd: Chambord's double-helix staircase and 440 rooms, Chenonceau arched clean over the River Cher, Villandry's geometric Renaissance gardens, and troglodyte villages carved into the soft tuffeau cliffs around Saumur. The riding is flat to gently rolling, so 40–60 km days leave time for cellar visits in Vouvray, Chinon and Saumur-Champigny, whose tasting caves sit right beside the route, and regional trains take bikes free if you want to shorten any stage. The catch is summer accommodation: riverside gîtes and converted manors book out months ahead for July and August — June and September are quieter, cheaper and cooler.
